Navistar’s engine diagnostic software, more popularly known as just NED, is a powerful tool that all techs should be familiar with. Here’s a brief introduction and tutorial that will help you get up and running.

Opening NED

This should go without saying, but the first thing you need to do is open the program. Look on your desktop for an icon that looks like this:

Once you’ve done that a small window will pop up and ask for your username and password.

TIP: Put a notepad or word document on your desktop with your NED login information inside. This will make logging in much easier for your techs.

Connecting to a Vehicle

The process for connecting up a vehicle using NED is pretty standard.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON but do not turn start the engine.
  2. Use your interface cable to connect to the vehicle’s diagnostic connector.
  3. Open up your NED software.
  4. If this is very first time using NED on your computer you will have to tell it which interface to use (See picture below)

If all goes well you’ll see the icon on the left (Green circle). This means that the ECM has successfully connected. If you are seeing the icon on the right, then something went wrong.

If you’re getting the “No ECM connected” icon then you will most likely want to redownload your interface drivers, check your adapter connection, and test with another adapter.
